Here is your holiday pep talk and the best way to survive and enjoy this stressful time of year! There is really only one rule you have to remember. Rule # 1 – When you go someone’s house to “celebrate,” do not talk to any friends and relatives whose perfect children never misbehave! Or it might be better to just ignore them and walk away, especially when they offer their unsolicited parenting advice. They have no idea how difficult our daily lives are and what we have to do every day just to survive.
And when you feel bad because you work with your kids all the time and these people don’t have a clue, just repeat this phase to yourself over and over again. “Autism is not my fault!” Then rinse and repeat!!! Just keep saying that until you actually believe it. Try not to let them get to you, and never notice how little they don’t have to teach their kids anything because they already know how to do things.
And when they offer all that wonderful advice, because they think the problem is our parenting, don’t listen. Just get up and leave. If you are nicer than I am, you can always make an excuse like, “I need to go the restroom or I need to check on my kid!” But don’t feel the need to be exspecially polite, because they are just making our lives harder. And they are hard enough from waking up to autism every day. Just know we can’t worry about what anyone thinks. Instead, we must always do the right thing to help our kids. So ignore, ignore and ignore again!
And if it really bothers you that they don’t get it, just buy them a copy of my book, for their holiday gift. That will shut them up for a while at least! LOL! And maybe even teach them a thing or two about our daily existence. I will even give you a bargain basement price when you order multiple copies. Last year, I had one mom order seven copies, one for each of her relatives. And it only cost her $10/copy plus shipping.
You can read “I KNOW YOU’RE IN THERE – Winning Our War Against Autism” at http://a.co/8f9kwT0 And remember when your kids have those holiday foods they shouldn’t be eating, increasing their water and exercise to get rid of the ill effects faster.
