Although Ryan enjoyed being praised when he did things correctly. He sometimes wanted to get in trouble. It was confusing when Ryan did the wrong thing to get a negative reaction from me, his teachers or his peers. However, over time this peculiar behavior started to make sense.
Our kids crave predictability and sameness above everything else. When my son didn’t know what to do at school, at home, or with friends; he would do something wrong. My yelling or someone getting mad was a reaction he could count on. Keeping things the same was the most important thing for Ryan back then. The world was a confusing place to my son. A negative reaction was somehow comforting when he didn’t know what to do or expect.
Most of us want to avoid anyone being angry with us. Autistic kids try to keep everything predictable. That is far more important than someone being upset with what they did. Who in their right mind would want to be yelled at? Why didn’t Ryan just listen to me and do as he was told?
This kind of strange behavior baffles parents. No you are not crazy, but our children make us think we are.
