Whenever someone mentions the word vaccine, it creates a fire storm. Everyone immediately goes to their corners and the fighting begins. Can’t we just stop arguing about this and join hands to find the solutions? Isn’t it possible that both sides of the argument are a little right?
In healthy children vaccines serve a purpose. But, there are too many of them and they need to be given when a child is older and their immune systems are more developed. Vaccines can be the final tipping point for children who already have an immune system that is under stress and not working properly. In many of our children a vaccine was the final assault on their immune system that helped cause autism. We need to eliminate the ones that are not for life threatening diseases. When people ask about why autism is increasing in epidemic numbers, that’s when I ask how many vaccines did you get as a child? Now our kids get 86 by the time they are eighteen years old. Are we putting too much stress on our children’s immune systems? And vaccines always need to be given one at a time and never when a child is already ill. In addition, our vaccines need to safer and tested.
The inserts in the vaccines tell it all. They say vaccines shouldn’t be given to anyone who has a compromised immune system. And isn’t that true for children with autism? The subsets and causes of autism are different, but the symptoms of autism are the result of a dysregulated and compromised immune system. In Dr. Mom terms that means our kids have immune systems that are messed up or broken. And there are many other things (besides vaccines) that affect a child’s immune function and cause autism. Severe illnesses and viral or hidden infections are just a few of the things that can cause “autism.”
Autism is complicated. If only one thing caused our children’s symptoms, I think it would have been solved a long time ago. It is a combination of many things that cause the “OVERLOAD” on our children’s immune systems.
Dr. Martha Herbert who wrote THE AUTISM REVOLUTION defines autism this way: “AUTISM IS NOT A HARDWIRED IMPAIRMENT STAMPED INTO THE BRAIN BY THE CHILD’S GENES AND DESTINED TO REMAIN FIXED FOREVER, AS WE’RE OFTEN TOLD. INSTEAD, IT IS THE TOTAL LOAD OF CHALLENGES TO A CHILD’S WHOLE SYSTEM THAT OVERLOADS THE BRAIN AND CAUSES THE BEHAVIORS ASSOCIATED WITH AUTISM.”
The good news is that means autism is TREATABLE ! And our kids do improve and get better when you can reduce the “total load” and help their immune system’s function better. That’s how we helped my son, Ryan recover. Today he is an aerospace engineer. The “experts” told me he would need to be institutionalized one day because he was so severely affected. They were WRONG! And what I wanted most for him actually happened…he is happy, has friends and is leading a typical life. I say he is recovered and not cured because he is still dependent on medications to keep his immune system working properly.
Our pharmaceutical companies need to be held responsible for the effects vaccines can cause. The vaccine court should never have happened and our government shouldn’t be the ones to pay when it is proven a vaccine was not safe and caused a problem. Aren’t the rest of us responsible for our actions? Why isn’t that true for BIG PHARMA?
Yet as much as I blame BIG PHARMA for only caring about the bottom line, I still wish we could stop fighting about what causes autism. The most important thing is that we need to be the voice of children who can’t speak for themselves. Our primary message needs be that AUTISM IS MEDICAL AND TREATABLE ! So more children get the medical treatment they need and deserve.
And for the record, treating our kid’s medical issues does not change who our children are. It just lets them be who they were supposed to be before autism came into our lives. Many from the neurodiversity crowd just want acceptance. Acceptance is no longer enough. And if you drank that Kool-Aid, I have news for you. Autism is NEVER a gift, our children are the ONLY gift!
